The end of 2017 is so close and it’s time to reflect on all the things that happened in the past 364 days. I guess everyone’s year ends with different lessons and shaped us in certain ways. As long as these lessons made you grow, nothing can stop you from being a better, more successful, happier person in 2018.
So here I am, thinking about all the lessons I’ve learned this year and writing them down:
- Take time for friends & family
One thing I can only advice you for the next year is to spend quality time with your friends and family. Don’t let anyone tell you you don’t need them. In fact, they can help you get through hard times but they also make your great times even greater.
- Dogs are always your best friends
They listen to what you say and they always know exactly how you feel by looking in your eyes. My dog is seriously my best friend and although he’s not able to speak to me (which is probably a good idea since I don’t want get annoyed by him speaking about food all the time), hugging him releases stress and makes me feel super happy right away. By the way, studies have shown that dog owners are happier and healthier. Think about all the fresh air you get from walking the dog daily 😉
- Do whatever feels good to you
I know that we kinda get sucked in by all the perfect bodies on Instagram. Everyone is having fun running, doing squads and just having a great time at the gym (why though?!). For me, yoga is the perfect balance in life. I rather listen to my body and do the sports and things I want to do instead of torturing my body. As long as you move in any way (walking your dog, dancing to your favorite song, running in nature), you’ll be much healthier and happier.
- You don’t always have to have a fix plan
Okay, I get it. Society is telling us: you graduate from school, go study, do your bachelors and masters degree, get a job, get married, have kids, get your own house to live in. Trust me, no one has to follow this path and no one is going to be on the same path as anyone else. Do whatever feels good to you in this very moment and figure out what you’re good at and what you want to do. And if you have to work in a job you don’t really enjoy for only a short period of time, that’s fine. As long as you don’t stop working towards what you really want to do.
- Don’t let yourself get down by negative news
These days it feels like something bad is happening every single second in many different parts of this world. We are surrounded by fear and anxiety. I know many people say: how can you not be informed about the world’s newest news?!?! But if I listened to all these things every single day, I couldn’t be happy anymore. So if you truly want to be more relaxed and calm in life, you need to stop listening to all the bad news. Why not read something nice once in a while? 🙂
- Stay creative, keep your dreams
As we grow into performing all day every day, we keep losing our creative minds. I’ve never been good at drawing or crafting, but who cares? It brings a nice change into your life by doing something you actually enjoy. I rather take pictures and it’s fun to edit them and I know a lot of people who feel the same way but they either don’t have the time or they feel shamed about it. Don’t do that, keep your dreams and the things you love. There’s only a certain amount of time you have, better use it before you lose it ;-).
- Praise others – praise yourself
BEING nice and friendly to people is definitely easier than SAYING something nice and friendly. I like to give and receive compliments. Not only to/from friends but also to/from strangers. Why not just tell something to your friends that you really appreciate? If you think about it, it’s the easiest way to make someone happy and they might realize something about themselves that they have never seen before. And believe me, seeing someone being happy by your words will make you feel happy too.
- Get rid of the stuff you don’t need
To be honest, I got rid of soooooo many clothes and stuff I don’t need anymore this year and it felt sooooo good every single time. In total, I minimized my wardrobe 5 times only in 2017. Get rid of everything that’s weighing you down. May it be the keys that you don’t even remember the lock they belong to, the clothes you haven’t worn all year long, the nail polish that has already run dry, the shoes that are dirty and won’t get clean anymore. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t really give value to your life and you’ll feel a loooot better.
- Listen to your intuition
If your inner voice (and I’m not talking about your stupid thoughts telling what to do kinda like angel and devil), I mean your heart, if your heart is telling you YES, do that or NO, better don’t, listen to that and act to that. We’ve all made various decisions in our lives, most of them were probably influenced by our weird thoughts, other people’s opinions, society standards or other crab that just doesn’t belong there. Listen to yourself, listen to your body, listen to your intuition. My dog doesn’t do anything that’s not compatible with his intuition. If he wants to cuddle, he sneaks into my bed. If he wants to be left alone, he sleeps in his bed all by himself. Listen to what your heart and body are telling you and act accordingly.
- Always put yourself first
That kinda goes side by side with listening to your intuition. Your life isn’t meant to be lived by anyone besides YOU. You are the creator of your life, you are responsible for your acts, you are living your life. So please, learn to put yourself first in life. If you’re in a relationship and you don’t want to lose your partner but you lose yourself, that’s not a healthy relationship. Always love yourself first and that way, you both will be happy and master all situations in life. Don’t forget to remind yourself that you have 80-100 years on this planet, create the life YOU want and not the life someone else wants.
After all, I guess we’re so ready for 2018.
One more advice for you: write everything down that you’ve learned this year and how it made you grow. It helps a lot to start fresh and with positive affirmations into 2018. Also, it makes you super proud of yourself to see all the ups and downs you’ve mastered this year :-).
